Anderson School District Five is located in the county of Anderson and serves over 13,000 students with over 900 teachers at 17campuses. Southwood Academy of the Arts is an arts focused public magnet school for the Visual and Performing Arts in Anderson Five. Up to 360 middle school students attend our school for both arts and their other academic courses. These students audition as 5th graders for specific arts areas and are accepted in those areas as “majors” during their middle school experience. Students have 6 ours per week (year-long) in their arts major (band, chorus, dance, strings, theatre, or visual art). Prior to and during high school, students audition to attend our arts high school courses. Approximately 500 high school students travel from their zoned high schools to SAA for content specific arts classes in dance, vocal music, music production, guitar, piano, orchestra, theatre and visual art (including AP Studio Art). These courses are semester-long. The mission of Southwood Academy of the Arts is to provide a nurturing and challenging learning environment that empowers artist-scholars to reach their full artistic and academic potential.
