SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities

District: SCGSAH  /  Site Since 2007

We asked stakeholders throughout the school to write three-minute responses to the question: “What makes SCGSAH unique?” Starting with the steering committee (SIC) and moving into professional development days with staff and faculty, we gathered the observations and insights below. We are a public, residential high school offering pre-professional instruction in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Our students live and learn on campus located in downtown Greenville, earning their SC High School diploma through academics that cater to creative minds, as well as a specialized scholars’ diploma upon successful completion of their rigorous arts and humanities curriculum. Our arts teachers are working artists; our academic teachers are active in their professional fields. Mentoring is as critical for us as instruction in content areas. Professionals in Student Life are also key educators in our residential setting. We are a safe place for all kinds of students, and we are uniquely able to focus on the whole child given our small student population. We welcome and value diversity and promote iverse thinking in our students. The school is a place where unique students are widely accepted, encouraged, and challenged to reach their full potential. Our Care and Concern team coordinates a range of supports and interventions to help students succeed and thrive. Through our Outreach programs, we are a resource to all of SC’s teachers and students. Our summer programs for middle and early high school students also bring younger students to residential, immersive arts experiences on our campus. We are a community that comes together to teach the next generation of those who love the arts and humanities. We are and we nurture human beings who know how to seek, strive, fail, get up, andapply that work to the myriad of paths hat life offers.
