Pine Street Elementary

District: Spartanburg 7  /  Site Since 1990

On the National Register of Historic Places and an ABC Model Site since 1989, Pine Street Elementary School weaves the arts into the fabric of each day by infusing arts standards with all content areas which deepens understanding and makes learning more meaningful. Students develop their creativity in arts classes producing art, composing dance, writing music, developing characters and imagining stories through the use of the Profile of the SC Graduate’s World Class Skills. PSS is committed to providing students a rigorous, standards-based arts education. Arts infusion makes learning visible, allowing students to master content in personal, meaningful ways. Students cultivate creativity and critical thinking skills as they construct and demonstrate understanding of all content areas. Teachers collaborate to create arts-infused curriculum and use their diverse teaching styles to deliver content to enhance students’ learningexperiences.
Our annual Artists-in-Residence Week has been a tremendous success. Six professional teaching artists enrich our arts program by training students for the week. Residencies have included puppetry, African drumming, seagrass basket weaving, mime, mosaics, and dance. AIR Week culminates with “Evening with the Arts” with students and artists showcasing their work to their parents and community. PSS presents school-wide productions yearly. Students work in every aspect of the production: acting, singing, dancing, designing sets, and working backstage. Parents and teachers work on scenery, costumes, and rehearsals. Community members/business partners donate money, time, and materials to help make the play a true “production.” Arts classes are taught by certified specialists. We offer opportunities for students to participate in Arts Clubs (chorus, visual art, dance, and drama). Students have multiple opportunities to see live performances of various art forms. Muse Machine entitles PSS to three professional performances at our school. Grade levels attend performances at Chapman Cultural Center exposing students to professional productions.
