Nestled among century-old live oaks, Mossy Oaks Elementary is a community school located within the city of Beaufort, South Carolina. Opened in 1962, it currently serves 425 students from pre-kindergarten through grade 5. MOES has gone from a traditional school, to a year round school, and is now an arts focused school. The school’s success can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of dedicated students, parents, and staff that see the value and need for a quality education. MOES is a Title I school with 72% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. The mission of MOES is to promote academic growth and character development and provide a standards-based arts education in a safe environment where every member of our school community is in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing, in order to prepare children for their unique roles in the world. The vision of all at MOES is to work with families and our diverse community to ensure that students are well prepared with all the necessary tools to be successful at the next level of their education. MOES is part of a school-choice district with many students attending the school because of its arts program. Current offerings include music, visual arts, and dance with a goal of adding a theater teacher in the 2017-18 school year. After school programs offered throughout the year include art club, strings, piano, and Honors Choir, as well as dance ensemble for students in grades 4 and 5. MOES and its staff have been the recipient of several grants including Foundation for Excellence Grants and The Peggy May Memorial Performing Arts Grant and is proud to be entering its first year as a designated ABC School.
