Our kindergarten through second grade students work with our artist-in-residence partner, Dance Collaborative, to learn the waltz while also integrating creative movement into literacy skills such as spelling and sequencing. Throughout the week, fairytales are connected across all subject areas through read alouds, math pattern activities, storytelling, visual art projects, and creative classroom experiences. This year, teachers also met after school to paint and design decorations for the event while receiving arts instruction from Ms. Purvis, helping transform the school into an immersive fairytale environment.
On the day of the event, students participated in a parade, royal ball, and tea party celebration. In the afternoon, third through fifth grade students adopted buddy classes to lead arts-integrated activities. Fourth graders wrote original fairytales with the support of AI tools to share with second graders, while fifth grade and kindergarten students created puppets and reenacted fairytales together. The Fairytale Extravaganza brings the entire school community together to celebrate creativity, collaboration, and joyful learning in a way that defines the culture of Berea Elementary.
