South Florence High School (SFHS) is located in the Pee Dee area of South Carolina in the town of Florence. With a mix of suburban and rural life, this mid-sized southern city boasts a performance theater, symphony orchestra, ballet companies, and museums. Residents demonstrate a love for the arts. SFHS has 1,673 students with a 56.9 % free/reduced rate (state average is 53.7%.) SFHS Fine Arts mission is to offer an innovative, comprehensive, quality arts education program that develops creative expression, active participation and lifelong learning through the arts. The arts faculty has worked aggressively for 19 years to implement a “State of the Art” large-scale fine arts initiative to increase all student learning, the effectiveness of teachers, and participation in the arts. The Community Arts Partnership, including business and community leaders, administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, parents, and students, developed the Fine Arts Strategic Plan. The plan led to the Fine Arts Program expansion to include Band, Chorus, Dance, Orchestra, Theatre, Visual Art, Music Appreciation, Guitar and Piano Labs, AP Studio Arts, Dance 1-4, Musical Theatre, History of Theatre and Technical Theatre. Based on researched arts innovations, 2017 SCCCRVPA, the ABC Model, and elements of the Profile of the SC Graduate and with administrative support, the Arts faculty has grown from four to ten teachers. Requests for arts classes have increased from 473 (2005-06) to 1233 (2019 -20), and the arts credits earned have increased from 589 (2005-06) to 1039 (2019-20). Our most recent designation as Florence 1 Schools Arts Magnet Program (AMP) offers arts students an educational program with an intense-specialized honors course of study and the opportunity to build their artistic skill while gaining real world experience. The SFHS Arts Magnet Program prepares students to enter college, conservatory or an artistic career.
