Arts Professional Development

Inspiring Creativity 

Description: This year, one faculty meeting per month was an arts integration professional development session. These were led by Caroline Carson (art), Amy Duhan (music), Lynnsey Hanks and Caroline Clarkson (2nd grade), Stephen Duerr (PE), and Catherine Griggs (kindergarten). All faculty and staff attended these sessions and topics included integrating music with math and ELA, visual arts with ELA and theater, theater with ELA, and dance with social studies. The vision for PD was to provide non-arts teachers with the vocabulary, tools, skills, knowledge of arts standards, and confidence to try including more arts integrated lessons in their teaching. Several non-arts teachers showed excitement and tried some of the lessons with their students. Overall, they were encouraged with how the lessons went and were enthusiastic about using them again next year. 

Three of our arts PD sessions were designated as collaborative planning time with grade levels to plan together with the arts teachers. This allowed for specific, grade-level content to be developed into meaningful arts integration opportunities. Our school plans to continue this model of professional development next year.  

Connection to Strategic Plan: 

Goal 2. Teachers will collaborate to create a data driven, comprehensive, standards-based arts program to enable our students to make connections across subject areas, be creative, and define our school culture.  

Goal 4. All teachers and administrators will be trained in arts content and integration through both on- and off-campus professional learning opportunities. 

Goal 5. Rosewood Elementary will partner with parents, stakeholders, and the community to promote the arts and arts integration at school and in the community.

Connection to Philosophical Framework: Arts PD this year inspired creativity in our teachers and in future teachers from USC. Rosewood teachers gained skills and confidence in using arts integration in their classrooms and were willing to try music, theater, and dance rather than just visual arts. We also partnered with Dr. Moon from USC and hosted her class to observe arts integrated teaching for the day. The arts teachers (Carson & Duhan) held introductory and closing sessions that day to prepare them for what arts integration is, what to look for on their visit, and their reflections after seeing the lessons. We also hosted several student teachers this Spring and several included the arts integration strategies from our PD sessions in their teaching.
