10:00 am – Noon South Carolina Arts in Education (SC AiE) Advisory Council  The SC AiE Advisory Council provides valuable, diverse perspectives to ABC Institute leadership on issues, concerns, challenges, and opportunities that may influence and impact arts education and learning opportunities in and through the arts in South Carolina. This year, the SC AiE Advisory Council  meeting serves as the opening session for the SC Arts Higher Education Forum.  The meeting agenda is as follows

10:10 – 11:00 am Hope and Engagement: Learning From the Past to Inform Present and Future Classrooms (recording) Hope and engagement sound like nice ideas, but not necessarily priorities for schools, especially considering all the challenges currently competing for attention. Thanks to our participation in the Gallup survey, however, we have learned that building hope and engagement is critical to arts education. Join the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in a conversation exploring how strategic focus on so-called “soft skills” can significantly impact school culture.

Noon – 1:00pm Lunch Break 1:00 – 1:50 pm (Live) Survive or Strive; Prevailing Reflections of the Past Year Every aspect of life, including education has been profoundly affected by the events of 2020. The pandemic impacted the financial stability of our institutions, disrupted and altered instruction, and brought to light the inequities of access that continue to exist. The Black Lives Matter movement brought to light the systematic biases that our students of color continue to overcome. Finally, the lingering and long-term challenges of social distancing and hybrid/virtual instruction to arts education programs.

2:00 – 2:50 pm (Live) Cultivating Creativity Amidst Chaos According to the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, creative-thinking is a desired skill to be taught within our classrooms. However, pre-pandemic research has found teachers (even arts teachers) struggle to implement creativity development in the classroom. Panelists will discuss how the challenges of 2020 have influenced their own professional creativity, new-found ways to nurture student creativity, and not-so-new strategies that continue to develop creativity within standards-based curriculums.
