The mission at Whitesville elementary (WES) is that “All aWESome students will have opportunities to learn through the Arts.” Whitesville Elementary is a Title I school nestled between the cities of Goose Creek, Moncks Corner and Summerville in Berkeley County. It has a mixture of country homes, farms and a fast growing population of subdivisions. Because of our fast growing area we are a large school of over 1,200 students, the largest elementary school in Berkeley County. Our population is a diverse mix of African-American, Caucasian and Hispanic students.
Whitesville is a neighborhood school offering weekly art, music and physical education classes. Our ELA teachers work at integrating creative writing into their curriculum during the year. We offer several afterschool arts activities including Art Club, Chorus, Drama and Ukulele Club. Our gifted arts students participate in the afterschool STEP program in various locations in Berkeley County. Our school also participates in “Engaging Creative Minds” program which uses the arts to help teach standards and concepts in ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies.
With 2017 being our first year with an ABC grant, our goal is to introduce drama as part of the arts to our students and faculty. We plan to work towards arts integration giving our teachers the tools they need and our students the multiple ways to succeed in education. We plan on developing a supply closet with materials that our homeroom teachers can use to integrate the arts and offer staff development to help our teachers be successful. Our plans include bringing in skilled people in the dramatic arts to work with our students and teachers and plan and organize memorable field trip experiences in the arts.
